Bushel

Definition

A dry volume unit used for agricultural commodities: the US bushel equals 35.2391 liters (2,150.42 cubic inches); the UK bushel equals 36.3687 liters.

Explanation

Grain prices on commodities markets are quoted in dollars per bushel. One US bushel of wheat weighs about 60 pounds (27.2 kg); one bushel of corn weighs 56 lb (25.4 kg); soybeans weigh 60 lb per bushel. The US produces roughly 2 billion bushels of corn per year. The term derives from Old French 'boissiel', a small box used for measuring grain.
