Historical Units

Cubit

Definition

The cubit is an ancient unit of length based on the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, typically ranging from 45 to 52 cm depending on the civilization.

Explanation

One of humanity's oldest recorded measurements, the cubit appears in Egyptian, Babylonian, Hebrew, and Roman texts. The Royal Egyptian cubit (~52.4 cm) was standardized using a granite master rod and used to build the Great Pyramid of Giza with remarkable precision. The shorter 'common cubit' of roughly 45 cm is the one referenced in most biblical descriptions, including Noah's Ark.
