Farad

Definition

The SI unit of electrical capacitance, defined as the capacitance of a capacitor that stores one coulomb of charge when a potential difference of one volt is applied (1 F = 1 C/V).

Explanation

Named after Michael Faraday. One farad is an enormous capacitance — most electronic capacitors are measured in microfarads (µF, 10⁻⁶ F), nanofarads (nF), or picofarads (pF, 10⁻¹² F). Supercapacitors used in electric vehicles and energy storage can reach thousands of farads. A 1 F capacitor charged to 1 V stores 0.5 joules of energy.
