Definition
A great circle is any circle on a sphere whose center coincides with the sphere's center, representing the shortest possible path between two points on the surface.
Explanation
On Earth, great circles include the equator and all lines of longitude. A flight from Los Angeles to London appears to arc northward over Greenland on a flat map — that path is actually shorter than flying due east because it follows a great circle. The concept is essential to aviation route planning; flying a great-circle route between distant cities can save hundreds of kilometers and significant fuel.

Latitude & Longitude
Latitude and longitude are a geographic coordinate system using angular degrees to uniquely identify any point on Earth's surface, with latitude ranging ±90° and longitude ±180°.
Bearing
A bearing is the horizontal direction of travel or of a target, measured clockwise in degrees from north (0°/360°), with east at 90°, south at 180°, and west at 270°.
Magnetic Declination
Magnetic declination is the angle between true (geographic) north and magnetic north at a given location, expressed in degrees east or west.
Dead Reckoning
Dead reckoning is the process of estimating a vessel's or vehicle's current position by starting from a known location and advancing it using recorded speed, elapsed time, and heading.
