Imperial/US

Quart

Definition

A volume unit equal to one quarter of a gallon: the US liquid quart is 946.353 mL; the UK imperial quart is 1,136.52 mL.

Explanation

The name derives from the Latin 'quartus' (fourth). One US liquid quart = 2 pints = 4 cups = 32 US fluid ounces. Motor oil, paint, and milk are frequently sold in quart containers in the US. The US dry quart (1,101.2 mL) is used for agricultural produce and differs from the liquid quart.
