The surveyor's chain, devised by Edmund Gunter in 1620, measures exactly 66 feet (20.1168 meters) and consists of 100 links. Ten chains make a furlong, and an acre is defined as one chain by one furlong. The chain was the standard land survey tool across the British Empire and shaped property boundaries still in use today.

Equal to 220 yards (201.168 meters), the furlong originated as the length of a furrow in a plowed field -- literally a 'furrow long.' Today it survives primarily in horse racing, where track distances are measured in furlongs. A standard horse racing furlong post marks each eighth of a mile around the track.
