Construction trades operate across two incompatible measurement systems simultaneously. US residential construction uses feet, inches, and fractions of an inch for layout; lumber yards sell in board feet; concrete suppliers deliver in cubic yards; roofing contractors estimate in squares; and plumbers work with nominal pipe sizes that bear little relationship to actual dimensions. This reference covers each unit with exact conversion factors and the context a contractor, inspector, or DIYer needs to use them correctly.
Linear Measurements (Feet, Meters, and the 3-4-5 Rule)
US construction layout uses feet and inches, with fractions down to 1/16 inch or 1/32 inch for finish work. The rest of the world uses meters and millimeters, with centimeters used for approximate dimensions.

The 3-4-5 rule for square layouts: A triangle with sides 3, 4, and 5 units has a perfect 90° angle at the corner where the 3-unit and 4-unit sides meet. Scale up for practical use: 6-8-10 ft or 9-12-15 ft for checking room corners and foundation layouts. The math works in any unit — feet, meters, or yards — because it is a ratio (a Pythagorean triple).

Board Feet: Lumber's Unique Volume Unit
A board foot (bd ft or FBM) is a unit of lumber volume equal to a piece 12 inches × 12 inches × 1 inch thick.
Definition: 1 board foot = 144 cubic inches = 2,359.74 cm³ ≈ 0.00236 m³
Calculation formula:
Board feet = (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) ÷ 12
Or equivalently:
Board feet = (T × W × L) ÷ 144 (all dimensions in inches)

Nominal vs actual lumber dimensions: A "2 × 4" is actually 1.5 inches × 3.5 inches. Board foot calculations use nominal dimensions (2 × 4), not actual dimensions. This is a convention, not an error — lumber pricing and board foot calculation both use nominal sizes, so they remain consistent with each other.
For projects requiring metric equivalents, note that European and Australian timber is sold by the cubic meter or linear meter with actual (not nominal) dimensions specified.
Concrete Volume (Cubic Yards and m³)
Concrete is ordered and priced in the US by the cubic yard (yd³). Internationally, cubic meters (m³) are standard.
Conversions: - 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = 0.764555 m³ - 1 m³ = 1.30795 cubic yards - 1 cubic foot = 0.037037 cubic yards
Volume formula for a slab:
Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Thickness ft) ÷ 27
Convert inches to feet before calculating: 4 inches = 4/12 = 0.333 ft.

Rule of thumb: Add 5–10% overage to calculated volume to account for subgrade irregularities and waste.

Roofing Squares (1 square = 100 ft²)
A roofing square is exactly 100 square feet of roof area. It is used exclusively for roofing materials — shingles, underlayment, and roofing paper are priced and packaged per square.
Definition: 1 roofing square = 100 ft² = 9.2903 m²
Roof area calculation steps: 1. Measure the footprint area (horizontal plan area) in ft² 2. Multiply by the pitch multiplier for the roof slope

Fastener Sizes (Imperial Gauge vs Metric)
Fasteners in US construction use wire gauge (for screws), diameter in fractions of an inch (for bolts), or penny weight (for nails). Metric fasteners specify diameter and pitch in millimeters.

Pipe sizing is among the most counterintuitive unit systems in construction. Nominal pipe size (NPS) does not correspond to any actual physical dimension.

The nominal designation originated from iron pipe sizing conventions in the 19th century and has not changed despite material changes. For sizing purposes, use OD for fitting compatibility, ID for flow calculations.
Electrical conduit: EMT (electrical metallic tubing) uses the same nominal/actual disconnect. 1/2 in EMT has a 0.706 in OD and 0.632 in ID.
Blueprint Scale Conversions
Architectural and engineering drawings use a scale ratio to represent large structures on paper.

Scaling measurement off a drawing: Use a scale ruler, or calculate: measure the drawing dimension in inches, then apply the scale factor.
Example: A wall measures 3.5 inches on a 1/4" = 1' drawing: - 3.5 inches × 4 (since 1/4" represents 1') = 14 feet
