Definition
The tsubo (坪) is a Japanese unit of area equal to the area of two tatami mats, approximately 3.306 m² (35.58 sq ft), and is equivalent to the Korean pyeong (평).
Explanation
Defined as one ken squared (roughly 1.818 m × 1.818 m), the tsubo is still widely used in Japanese real estate listings even though metric is the legal standard. An average Japanese apartment of 70 m² is approximately 21 tsubo. The identical Korean pyeong shares the same origin and value; apartment sizes in South Korea are routinely quoted in pyeong alongside square meters.
