The US customary cup is 236.6 mL—about 5.5% smaller than the metric cup. For most cooking this difference is negligible, but in baking and large-batch recipes it accumulates. Australian cookbooks specify metric cups, so US readers using an American cup set will consistently under-measure by roughly 1 tablespoon per cup.
